The purpose is to provide security during public events, provide instruction in areas of crime prevention, safety, alcohol and drug awareness, and to foster positive relationships between the police department and the members of the community. Crime Prevention

Neighborhoods throughout the city are taking a stand against crime. Officer Jim Sticklen heads the neighborhood watch groups. He will meet with local residents or businesses to discuss their concerns and any problems they are experiencing in an attempt to help find a solution. The police department sponsors a crime watch and helps educate residents in how to identfy and report suspicious activity.

The Alexandria Police Department is a member of the Northern Kentucky Crime Prevention Coalition which supplies teaching aids, free information, videos and seminars on every topic imaginable. Programs include Bike Safety Tips & Rodeo, Personal Identification Cards for Children and Special Needs Persons, How to Defend Yourself from Harm, How to Identify and Report Child Sexual Abuse, Children on the Internet Safety, Date Rape, Alcohol and Drugs, Binge Drinking and much more 

CSI Citizens Academy

 The members of the Alexandria Police Department would like to invite the citizens of Alexandria to participate in our second CSI Citizens Academy starting in February 2011.  The objective of this program is to allow citizens to learn about and observe firsthand the workings of their police department’s criminal investigation unit.  Participants will be instructed by members of the department in variety criminal scene techniques.  These subjects will be taught in various settings and will include hands-on experience.  The key to the success of this program is the enthusiasm and participation that the citizens bring to our CSI Citizens Academy.    

The CSI Citizens Academy will be held at the Alexandria Police Department, 8236 West Main Street, Alexandria, KY 41001 once a week for four to six weeks starting in February 2011.  Sessions run from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  Some classes may be held at other locations.  Each student will be able to participate in a ride-along with an officer during their patrol.  We would like all students to attend every class but do understand that sometimes this isn't possible.  In order for students to graduate, they must not miss more than two classes.

Volunteers In Police Service

V.I.P.S.

"It is more important than ever to find innovative ways to assist law enforcement in protecting our Communities. VIPS is a creative solution that harnesses a very powerful  resource - Citizen volunteers, "Attorney General John Ashcraft."

Since September 11, 2001, the demands on local law enforcement have increased dramatically. As a result, the already limited resources of police agencies are being stretched further than ever at a time when the country needs every available officer out on the beat.

In many jurisdictions around the country, volunteers in their communities have offered their time and skills to local law enforcement agencies.

In 2004, the Alexandria Police Department  announced to the community that we were looking for a few good people and we found them. Volunteers in Police Service provides a value-added level of support to our agancy and to our community. Although we are designed and staffed to provide appropriate policing and law enforcement services to the community, there is always more to do! Our volunteers allow our officers to focus on policing and enforcement by taking on these additional duties by providing support to the clerical staff, following up with victims of certain types of crimes and provide them with referrals to other agencies. They participate in citizen patrol programs, where they perform city business checks, vacation checks and back-up our officers by assisting with traffic control or just being another set of trained eyes and ears.

Applicants must pass similar background investigations, drug screening, and interviews as police officers do and they are trained in their assigned task.

Since 2004, our VIPS have worked over 13,641 hours, saving the community over $272,000.00. 

Our VIPS personnel work in records, evidence collection, investigations, citizen patrols, victim assistance, tactical and firearms training. They are dedicated and loyal to our agency and community.

We thank them and we don't know what we ever did without them.

 What is Exploring?

Exploring is Learning for Life's Career Education Program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) or 14 through 21 years old. Adults advisors are selected by the participating organization for involvement in the program. Color, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic background, economic status, and citizenship are not criteria for participation.

Exploring's purpose is to provide experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to investigate the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and communities.

Exploring is based on an unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organizations in their communities. Local community organizations initiate an Explorer Post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, and develop.

Explorer posts can specialize in a variety of career skills. Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character education, and leadership experience.

Methods

The methods of Exploring have been carefully chosen to meet the needs of young adults.

• Voluntary association between youth and adults. Because Exploring is voluntary, youth are receptive to new ideas, experiences, and relationships. For the Explorer, these relationships provide a connection to new ways of thinking and acting as well as a new identity as a responsible young adult.
• Ethical decision making. Exploring asks young people to be responsible for themselves, for a program of activities and experiences, and for other people, thereby providing numerous opportunities for youth to make effective and ethical decisions. These opportunities are enhanced by the influence of capable adults and structured activities.
• Group activities. Exploring activities are interdependent group experiences. Success depends on the cooperation of all.
• Recognition of achievement. Recognition might come through formal awards, but it also is achieved through the acknowledgment by peers and adults of a young person's competence and abilities.
• Democratic process. Explorer posts provide exposure to democratic ideals and skills that are needed throughout life.
• Curiosity, exploration, and adventure. Curiosity is encouraged and a sense of exploration and adventure is developed through new experiences that provide opportunities for youth to acquire new skills and participate in action-oriented activities

Our Instruction Objective   “ To develop and enhance the options of self defense, so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked.”

What is it?  R.A.D stands for Rape Aggression Defense, which in turn stands for Defense Against Abduction.  To date, R.A.D. has been taught to over one hundred fifty women in Alexandria and also another fifty in Northern Kentucky assisting other instructors. To date, Alexandria Police Department has three certified instructors.  Our instructors teach in the city and also provide help to other instructors in the area.  R.A.D is a program that is set up to be very realistic/hands on self-defense training.  Safety and Survival in today’s world requires a definite course of action.  We hope to provide effective options by teaching women to take an active role in their own self-defense and psychological well-being.  The course is 12 hours long, set up over a two-week period.  We provide students’ manuals, equipment and students even receive a lifetime membership.  Best of all, the city provides this self-defense class free to all women.

R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense

The cornerstone of R.A.D. Systems, this course has its foundations in education and awareness. The course includes lecture, discussion and self defense techniques, suitable for women of all ages and abilities. Classes range from nine to twelve hours in length, depending on the Instructor.  

R.A.D. Advanced Self Defense

Builds on techniques and strategies from the Basic class, and adds defenses against the edged weapon and firearm. This program also covers more prone defense strategies, multiple subject encounters and even low and diffused light simulation exercises. Minimum of twelve (12) hours, fifteen (15) with simulation, for participants who have already completed the Basic Physical Defense Program. 

Aerosol Defense Options

Using the proven R.A.D. Systems philosophy, A.D.O. destroys the myths and manufacturer hype about pepper spray effectiveness and even their ability to deter a Committed Focused Aggressor. Learn the most realistic methods for accessing, deploying and assisting the aerosol defense option; And if it fails to work (and it may), learn the proven backup strategies needed for successful escape. R.A.D. Systems has conducted over 300 video taped live test exposures to various aerosol products with a wide range of delivery systems. Stop believing a manufacturers selling hype, we know what works and what doesn't through hands on experience. Minimum of two (2) hours for participants. Requires (1) day for instructor level certification, in addition to current Basic Physical Defense Instructor Certification.

Keychain Defense Options

Continuing to enhance the many options of self defense, this program is for the Instructor who wants to put an impact weapon in the hands of the students they train. The R.A.D. Keychain Defense Options course is one of the only realistic and court-defensible impact weapons programs available for the general public. Combining proven R.A.D. Physical Defense strategies with revolutionary impact weapons defense techniques makes this program a worthy addition to the R.A.D. System. Realistic employment, combat effectiveness, "light impact", fluid transitions and even simulation training exercises are all part of this program. This program revolves around use of the Kubotan in conjunction with weapon-enhanced physical skills. "No Flash and Trash" techniques here, only the best of the best! Minimum of three (3) hours for participants, four (4) with simulation. Requires one (1) day for instructor level certification, in addition to current Basic Physical Defense Instructor Certification.

No. This program is designed for the average woman with no previous experience or background in physical skills training.

3.      What is the cost of a basic program?
At this time the cost is free.  Some instructors offer this program as a community service through the local police department. Many colleges and universities offer the RAD program as a credit course. Check with the instructor in your area for more detailed information.  

4.      Is this program one person's opinion?
The R.A.D. program as it appears today is a result of the contributions of many R.A.D. instructors across the United States and Canada. 

5.      How many women have taken this program?
To date, over 250,000 women have attended RAD Basic Physical Defense Program. 

6.      How long is this program?
The Basic Physical Defense program is a minimum of nine hours up to a semester long for those instructors who teach for college credit. 

7.      Can I bring my younger daughter with me?
Yes. It is very common for mothers and daughters to attend this program together. In addition to developing and enhancing their options of self-defense, it seems to be a great bonding experience for them.  

8.      What are the requirements to become an instructor?
Any woman with the desire to share this information with other women may become an Instructor. Men who wish to become R.A.D. Instructors must have a law enforcement background or be willing to submit to a background investigation.
