Park History

The Alexandria Community Park was dedicated on Sept. 21, 1997. The 80+ acres which make up the park were originally part of the Alexandria Reservoir. The dams and spillway wall area which takes the overflow from the upper lake to the lower basin were a WPA project back in the Roosevelt Era. The walking trail which now completely circles the lake was a project which was started in the 1980’s by the original Park Board which was disbanded by the City Council in 1989. The ball fields were constructed by The Campbell County Jaycees, along with assistance from local Army Reserve Units.

In 1996 a new group, lead by John Stein, took up the challenge to recreate the park. At this point, the area was fully overgrown with weeds and the lake could not even be seen from Alexandria Dr. This group began the clean up and planning for a new park. The park was officially dedicated in September of 1997. The City Council also established a Volunteer Park and Recreation Committee to help further goals and objectives for parks and recreation in the city. This group continues today, but will soon be transitioning to an Official City Board.

During this time many projects have been completed, and you can find at the park: 9 acre fishing lake, playground area, 2 baseball fields which convert in fall to 1 soccer field, basketball courts, over 3 miles of paved walking trails and several nature trails, handicap fishing pier, parking lots which started out gravel and are now paved, picnic shelters by the lake and playground (which can be reserved at the city offices for a small fee), and stone grill at main shelter. Annual events which include an Easter Egg Hunt, Fishing Derby, Halloween Safenight, Halloween Haunted Walk and Christmas Tree Lighting.

There have been many contributors over the years which are too many to be listed. Their names can be found listed on our special sign in the park. Today the park is currently being well maintained by the City Maintenance Crew.

If you have any historic information or pictures of the park, lakes, or spillway. Please let us know.
